Ross Bustin (Maryville)

On Sunday and Monday Ross Bustin (Maryville) received some One on One Kicking and Punting Instruction. Ross will be a senior this year at Maryville and is looking to have a big season. He handled most of the extra points and some field goals last season and did some punting at the end of the season. I had heard really good things about Ross from some of my other students who had seen him kick and I was looking forward to working with him.

Ross is a very natural kicker and when I watched him kick I was impressed. He was kicking some field goals into a stiff breeze and was getting good height and distance. I did not try and change Ross very much but I tried to point out just a few technical things that I thought could use some improvement. We worked on the One Step Drill the correct way and he started to see the improvement with his own eyes. By the second day he had kicked around 8 or 9 kicks in a row from 35 to 40 yards.

By the beginning of the day I could see that Ross had field goals down and so he wanted to start working on punting. I did not expect for him to be able to learn the techniques of punting in half a day but he was a quick study. We worked on the Drop Progression Drill and within 20 minutes he was hitting Spiral Nose Over (SNO) punts almost every time!
I believe that Ross is a very good kicker and punter but I think his ability to take in information and be coachable was the most impressive quality about him. It was great getting to know him and watching him improve and I hope he gets plenty of opportunities to show people how good he can truly be.
