On July 18-19
Nick Pollard (Father Ryan High School) received some
One on One Instruction for his Field Goal Kicking. Nick is one of the top kickers in the state of Tennessee and is highly rated by Chris Sailer and Ray Guy kicking services. Nick came to work with me on transitioning to the ground for field goals.

Foot position, foot position, and more foot position was the focus over the two days of lessons. Nick has a huge leg and has the capability to be a big time college kicker. I was impressed with the 'pop' in his leg but he was having trouble getting the same distance and height that he was showing when kicking off the one inch tee. This is a common problem with kickers that are making the transition off the ground. In the picture (above) you can see Nick closing off his foot.

I worked almost exclusively with Nick's foot position and it is a difficult thing to teach because a lot of kickers are use to 'closing off' their foot when kicking. We worked on the No Step Drill, One Step Drill, and a modified One Step Drill. By the end of the last day Nick was finally starting to get the hang of it.
Nick is a bright kid and hard worker and it was a pleasure working with him. I probably told him some things he did not want to hear but I believe my job as a consultant is to tell the truth. He now knows what he needs to work on and I believe with a few weeks of practice he will be booming those same kicks off the ground as he is with the one inch tee. I wish Nick the best of luck in the future and I hope to work with him again after the season as he prepares for college.
