On Wednesday and Thursday Marshall Keenan (Ravenwood High School) came to Hendersonville, TN for some One on One Kicking and Punting Instruction. Marshall is entering his senior season and has never had any instruction before on either his kicking or punting, but was still very skilled for as little coaching as he has received.Marshall and I first started with his field goal technique and we worked on getting him some consistent steps and kicking up and through the ball. Next, I introduced him to the One Step Drill and by the end of the first day he hit some kicks as long as 50 yards!
At the end of the day we worked on his punting using the Drop Progression Drill. It is very difficult, if not impossible, to fit in kicking and punting in two days of lessons but we did introduce many of the basics for punting.
On Thursday Marshall was wide awake and ready at the field at 7:30 AM and was working on the Drop Progression Drill. I was delighted to see him ready to learn and we got started working on his punting. He put in some really good work on the punting drills and by the end of the session he was really understanding the drills so that he could take them home and perfect them.
Finally, I worked with Marshall on his kickoffs, which he did a fantastic job with. He worked at kicking up and through the ball, much like field goals, and really started to hit some good kicks. I clocked one kickoff at a 4 second hang time! His height and distance were much improved.
It was really a pleasure working with Marshall. I enjoyed coaching him as he was very eager to learn and took in almost as much as he could in two days. I look forward to possibly working with him later in the summer and I am anxious to see his progress this season.
