On Sunday and Monday Greg Colquitt (Maryville High School) received some One on One Punting Instruction. Greg is the cousin of my teammates Britton and Dustin Colquitt, who are some of the best punters in Tennessee history. Greg was looking to sharpen up his skills before the season. When I first watched Greg punt I could see that he was already very fundamentally sound. He had a good drop and pretty good footwork but was not turning over a lot of punts. The sign of a great punter is how many balls you turn over and I could see there were some things I could refine in his technique.
I put Greg through the Drop Progression Drill and after about 20 minutes he started to figure it out. The drill helps show inconsistencies in someone's footwork and drop. I saw that he was dropping the ball outside but he was having a difficult time breaking the habit. We went over the video after the session and he could see the same thing I saw about the drop.

On the final day he came out and tried to drop the ball on the hip. He was very willing to learn and improve and sometimes just knowing you have a problem is the first step to improvement. After the lesson we had the video review and he could see again that the drop was going outside.
The next day he texted me and told me he went out to punt with his cousin Dustin and was turning over almost all of his punts! I was very pleased to hear that the drills were working and he will continue to improve with practice.
It was a pleasure working with Greg and I look forward to seeing his progress this season and with the genes in his family he should be turning over booming punts in no time!
